[...] Soapmaking – It’s Easy Making soap is like a science experiment, except this one you’ll love, as the results are something you’re going to love. Once you start making your own soap, you’ll soon be hooked on how great it is to use and enjoy the feeling of luxury soap on your skin. Soap making ingredients are easy to find and buy and a soap making recipe is all you need to get started.A few items may need to be purchased such as safety gear like rubber gloves, goggles and a heavy apron. It’s also important to wear clothing with long sleeves to protect your arms from any splashes. Some of the necessary equipment you will need is an accurate scale. This should be able to weigh as low as 1/10 of an ounce, a stainless steel pot, although an enamel one will also do, a large plastic or stainless steel spoon, a couple of thermometers that will measure 90 degrees to more than 200 degrees, a common household stick blender, some plastic containers with at least one of them having a lid. One of the containers will be marked with the words, LYE in very large black bold lettering. The most used supplies you will have to buy will be lye. Here most people use the brand Red Devil but you can also purchase it in powder form. You’ll also be using olive oil or whatever oil your recipe calls for, in some cases lard and usually any number of different aromatherapy oils to produce the fragrance. One does need to be careful as the fumes from the lye can be caustic, so make sure you mix the lye in an open area. Gas will emanate from the lye and the lye will then become hot. It will take between two and three hours to cool, so be prepared to spend some significant time making soap.Soap making with lye is probably the only area where you need to take the most caution. Once you’ve passed this point, there are no real dangers. It’s not recommended that young children be allowed to make soap with lye without an adult being present.Stick blenders will help you to mix all your ingredients well so you can achieve saponification. Depending on the soap making recipe you are using the time it takes to reach this point will vary. Once that is done your ready to pour your soap into the soap making molds you have chosen to use and then put the soap away to cure.Depending on how long your soap making recipe will take to cure the next step is to remove the bars from the molds and wrap accordingly. If you want you can test your soap to judge the pH levels. Using pH paper for this it should rate around 7 to 9.The more soap you make the more experienced you will get and it won’t be long before you are creating your own soap making recipes. Many people are even making soap as a cottage industry business. In this economy everyone is looking for ways to make some extra income and this is a very simple and inexpensive way to get started. Everyone loves the luxury of homemade soap and it’s probably the one thing they will not scrimp on. It’s a little bit of luxury that everyone is entitled to.By: Jean Sutherland About the Author: Learn more about making your own soap at our website, Soap Making Made Easy. [...]
